Otomi – Bucket Hat

Otomi celebrates Mexican culture and the traditional textile art of embroidery on cotton. Otomi women are known worldwide for their hand-embroidered fabrics. Colours are the absolute protagonists of their creations and carry with them a profound social and cultural value. The Otomi ancestors, who have inhabited the highest mountains of La Sierra Madre in Mexico for centuries, have created the most incredible designs taking entire months to finish.
The manufacturing process starts by preparing organic cotton cloth that is then naturally dyed using ancient techniques involving flowers, plants and vegetables. To create the cloth, Mexican artist Maria Garcia draws freely on fabric without the use of stencils. Once the embroidery is finished, the fabric is washed by hand, left to dry in the sunlight and ironed immediately afterwards.
